Resolving conflicts between the moral standards

One of the major difficulties encountered when trying to come to a moral judgment is that often the various moral standards can come into conflict. The major conflict typically involves egoism, relativism, and the moral property rights of the firm's shareholders versus the other moral standards. Conflicts between utilitarianism and the duty-based moral standards (Kantianism, moral rights, and justice) also tend to arise requiring a resolution. Unfortunately, no uncontroversial solution to reconciling conflicts has ever been established. On this basis, the best we can do is attempt to apply the various moral standards in order to identify on what basis a given action may be ethically justified. This essentially means taking a pluralistic approach to moral judgment, which is the position I would recommend as well.57

Regardless whether or not one adopts a pluralistic approach to morality, at the end of the day, each individual will have to decide which moral standard or standards are the ones that make the most sense to them to apply in determining what is ethically right or wrong in the workplace. At the very least, attempting to apply or reflect upon all seven of the moral standards discussed will provide several potentially differing ethical views or perspectives that can lead us to justify better our own decision making, or better critique the decision making of others including the actions of business firms. Coming to a moral judgment through a moral reasoning process based on the moral standards is one critical component of the entire ethical decision-making process potentially leading to ethical behavior.
